  • Yes!!! Basketball season is upon us and I am excited to watch games! 3A Basketball will be another exciting year filled with a lot great teams and players on display. Who will make it too Coos Bay? What unknown player will make noise and lead their team to state? All those questions will be answered starting in a couple weeks. A couple headlines coming into season.. Two teams are the heavy favorites to win the title... #1 De La Salle Even though De La Salle graduated First Team All State Kadeem Nelson, Theo Aclan and Anthony Mosely, I still have them down as the favorites to win it all! De La Salle returns three key components in reigning State POY George Sadi, Coach Broadous and his entire coaching staff. All three components has participated in the last three state championship games! When you have that much experience in the locker room then everyone else will follow suit and be all in. #2 Santiam Christian Santiam Christian will be lead by 2021 Josh Baugher and he is good as advertised. Josh is the top recruit in 3A (receiving interest from colleges at all levels) and will look to lead his team back to Coos Bay. With Zach Baugher graduating, look for Koby Williamson, Ben Galceran and Joe MaQatish to play a bigger role. SC has size, length and talent at each position where it can cause problems for De La Salle. A pair of collegiate coaches join 3A.. Catlin Gabel has hired Tim Whittle. He was recently the head coach at MaCalester College in (MN). Douglass has hired Bin Van Loon. He was recently assistant coach at Umpqua College (OR). Early Game to watch.. #1 De La Salle vs #2 Santiam Christian on 12/6 at Western Christian. 2019 All Preseason Teams First Team: Sr. George Sadi (co poy) Jr. Josh Baugher (co poy) Sr. Mason Gill- Sutherlin Jr. Josh Wart - Amity Sr.Payton Garrison- Dayton * Jr. Jonah Zeller- Catlin * Second Team Sr. Jett Sheng- Catlin Gabel Sr. Trey Foster- St. Mary’s Sr. Andrew Earl- Umatila Jr. Max Smith- Phill Sr. Pedro Chavez- Nyssa (* )-Player did not make All State last season. Everyone else mentioned was named All State last season. BEFORE READING YODA AND MY PREDICTIONS... PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT EVERY TRANSFER! • Tim Whittle has been named the new Head Coach at Catlin Gabel. After nine season, Whittle recently resigned as Head Men’s Coach at MaCalester College in Minnesota with 35-190 overall record. Prior to his stint as being a head coach, Whittle was an assistant coach at DIII Washington University in St. Louis and won two national championship. Whittle will replace Shawn Malloy, who lead Catlin to its first back to back State Tournament appearance in school history. Catlin returns some of the top players in 3A including, All State Jett Sheng and two All League performers in Jonah Zeller and Ubedei McGautha.
  • After two short years, Shawn Malloy and Catlin Gabel decides to “mutually agree” to go there separate ways. In his first two years as a head coach, he lead Catlin to an overall 34 win and 22 loss record. During that time, he lead Catlin to most wins in school history at 22 and the first coach to lead Catlin to back to back State Tournament appearances. “ I’ll just want to thank Catlin Gabel for giving me the opportunity to grow as a coach and I’m grateful for all the wonderful people I connected with in my two years there. “- Shawn Malloy
